John Francis Murray
Until embarking on a career as an independant artist, John Francis Murray worked as a banknote designer for the US Bureau of Printing
and Engraving in Washington DC where for 16 years he was responsible for designing American currency. Prior to his job at the BEP
he studied Fine Arts at the Maryland College of Art and Design and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 2005, he was chosen by the
Georgetown University's Jesuit Community to design and paint four large-scale paintings with 16 saints to be installed in the Chapel
of the Jesuits' Residence. The unveiling of the first painting took place in 2006 and received high praise from the community of the
Georgetown University. In 2007, John Francis Murray and Ron Brooks restored and repainted the decorative murals at the Franciscan
Monastery in Washington DC. In addition to being an active painter and restorer, John Murray is also an adjunct professor of Painting
and Sculpture at the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington DC. As a fine artist he is represented by Newman Galleries in
Philadelphia, PA and NIchols Gallery in Charlootesville, VA.
Trained as a realist painter and later serving an apprenticeship in Byzantine iconography and church decoration he has spent a 23
year professional career painting ornamental schemes in buildings designed for all types of uses. As a former employee of Evergreen
company, Dean worked on The Michigan State Capitol replicating decorations that were lost to substrate failure and re-modeling.
He's done similar projects at the US Library of Congress and the Orchestra Hall in Detroit. He also painted a number
of supporting ornaments for the completion of the Cox Corridor on the House side of the U.S. Capitol. As a free lance contractor
for Tom Moore Studios, Dean worked on the restoration of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Annapolis Maryland. He also participated in
the restoration of St. Geoge's Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn, Massachusets.
